A team of EEE Students, KuryentEEE, comprising of Deceryl Trajico Cortez (IV-BSEE), Jamie Nicole Lim Castalla (IV-BSCoE), Mark Nicholas Labor Cagas (IV-BSCoE), Carl Aries Padilla Oliva (IV-BSCoE), reigned as champions during this year’s Meralco Idol Hackathon 2024 with their project entitled, “$BOLTZ(BLTZ): Decentralized Net Metering and Tracking System on Arbitrum Blockchain”
According to the team, ‘$BOLTZ (BLTZ) is an advanced blockchain-based decentralized platform engineered to drive renewable energy adoption and foster energy conservation. Built on the Arbitrum Layer 2 blockchain, $BOLTZ ensures a secure, transparent, and decentralized infrastructure for real-time energy monitoring. The platform includes a user-friendly dashboard designed for net metering customers, enabling them to track solar energy production, consumption, and exchanges with the grid—including surplus exports and grid imports—in real-time.
The platform introduces BLTZ, an ERC-20-compliant utility token, as an incentive mechanism to reward users for contributing surplus renewable energy to the grid and for adopting energy-saving practices. These tokens are distributed via secure smart contracts and can be redeemed for electricity bill discounts, traded on decentralized exchanges, or utilized within a partner ecosystem. By providing a transparent, secure, and decentralized infrastructure, $BOLTZ empowers consumers, promotes sustainable energy behaviors, and strengthens accountability within the energy sector.’
The Meralco Idol Hackathon is a 3-day national hackathon event organized by Meralco that is open to undergraduate students. It was held last November 18-20, 2024 at the Meralco Multi-Purpose Hall, Ortigas Center, Pasig City.
The first day involves a project proposal round, where teams present their concepts for the qualifying round. The top 15 teams advance to the final stage—a 24-hour implementation phase, followed immediately by a project pitch.
