BS Electrical Engineering
Formally instituted in 1916, the BS Electrical Engineering (BS EE) Program is the oldest of the three undergraduate programs being offered at the UP Electrical and Electronics Engineering Institute (UP EEEI). Since its inception, the program has been training future engineers who can model, analyze, plan, design, operate, and control electric power systems.
To remain relevant to, and competitive with, the other engineering disciplines, the program is periodically assessed and updated. A major revision to the BS EE program was done in 1994 where two new programs under the Department of Electrical Engineering (now the EEEI) – the BS Computer Engineering (BS CoE) Program and BS Electronics and Communications (BS ECE) Program were instituted. Prior to this revision, BS EE students were offered options to take specialty courses in the electronics, communications and computer fields. With the institution of the BS CoE and BS ECE Programs, the BS EE program focused on power systems and machines. A significant number of common foundational courses were still required across the three programs.
More recently, between 2014 and 2016, the BS EE program was assessed by the Philippine Technological Council (PTC) in accordance with the Certification and Accreditation System for Engineering Education (CASEE). This certification system was developed to evaluate the substantial equivalency of engineering programs in countries who are signatories to the Washington Accord. The BS EE Program was awarded the certification for the Academic Year 2016-2017 and Academic Year 2017-2018.
A new four-year curriculum was adopted in the Academic Year 2018-2019. This curriculum covers EEE Bodies of Knowledge classified into five areas: (1) EEE Fundamentals, (2) Field-specific Fundamentals, (3) Field-specific topics, (4) Foundational Mathematics and Physics courses, and (5) General Education courses. Alongside this, several innovations were introduced into the curriculum. First is the institution of introductory courses on Systems, and Circuits and Electronics. Second is the introduction of the Unified Laboratory framework as a platform to reinforce universal skills of design, analysis, debugging, verification and documentation. Finally, to better prepare students to plan and manage their final year capstone project, a challenge laboratory is introduced in the proposed curriculum.
