Dr. Joel Joseph Marciano receives honorary doctorate degree from Hokkaido University

Last January 27, the Hokkaido University conferred an Honorary Doctorate Degree upon Dr. Joel Joseph Marciano Jr. during an official ceremony held in Hokkaido University Conference Hall, Hokkaido, Japan.

The University recognizes Dr. Marciano’s expertise in the field of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, which he has been part of for more than 20 years. He has since significantly contributed to the advancement of science and technology in the Philippines. He devoted his career in the development of space exploration and utilization in the country and has led the development of micro satellites for scientific earth observation – working together with Hokkaido University.

He has previously worked with Hokkaido University as its ambassador from 2017 to 2022 and the Hokkaido Summer Institute, having served as an invited lecturer since 2016. Dr. Marciano delivered a commemorative lecture titled “Building the Space Value Chain in the Philippines: The Catalytic Role of Hokkaido University and International Cooperation” after the conferment ceremony. 

Dr. Marciano is currently serving as the Director-General of the Philippine Space Agency (PhilSA) and had previously served as acting Director of the Department of Science and Technology – Advanced Science and Technology Institute (DOST-ASTI) as well as the Director of Electrical and Electronics Engineering Institute (EEEI) from 2009 to 2015.
